Why Health and Safety Matters

People so often view health and safety as an obstruction to them working or having fun - this is really not the case and the following paragraph (which I just found on a job description page on the HSE's website) sums it up very well:

"Every year 39 million days are lost to British industry as a result of accidents and ill health caused by work activities. Every year more than 30,000 people suffer a major injury caused by work activities. Every year more than 2 million people suffer from work related ill health. Every working day at least one person will lose his or her life. These are the facts that tell you why our work matters. We want health and safety to be recognised as a cornerstone of a civilised society and, with that, to achieve a record of workplace health and safety that leads the world."

Geez, one person dies every day at work? Definitely a good quote on the importance of health and safety
